Basic Grow Setup
Basic Grow Setup
You don’t need a complicated setup to grow mushrooms. A clean space, stable conditions, and the right materials will get you most of the way there.
What You Need
- Colonized grain or grain spawn
- Substrate (CVG or Masters Mix)
- A clean area to work
- A stable room temperature environment
- Basic sanitation (alcohol, gloves)
Environment
Keep your grow in a space that is:
- Around 68–75°F
- Out of direct sunlight
- Not exposed to constant airflow or dust
- Relatively clean and undisturbed
You don’t need sterile conditions for basic growing—just work clean and avoid contamination risks.
If you’re doing agar or open transfers, sterile technique is required.
Fruiting Setup
Once your substrate is fully colonized:
-
For CVG (dung-loving species):
Cut a slit just above the substrate and allow fresh air exchange. -
For Masters Mix (wood-loving species):
Cut a slit directly into the side of the substrate and fruit from the bag.
Important Notes
- Stability matters more than perfection
- Avoid constantly moving or checking your grow
- Keep conditions consistent day to day
- Fresh air and moisture balance are key during fruiting
Common Mistakes
- Overcomplicating the setup
- Changing conditions too often
- Using direct sunlight
- Letting the grow dry out
- Introducing fresh air too early
