Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between sterilized grain and grain spawn?
Sterilized grain is what you inoculate to grow mycelium.
Grain spawn is already fully colonized and ready to mix with substrate.
How much liquid culture should I use?
About 2cc per pound of grain.
When should I break and shake?
Around 30% colonization.
Do I need sterile conditions?
For most growers using pre-sterilized grain or spawn, you don’t need sterile conditions—just work clean and avoid airflow and contamination sources.
If you’re transferring or working with liquid culture (like injecting into a sterile jar), clean technique is usually enough if everything stays closed and controlled.
If you’re working with agar, cloning, or doing open transfers, sterile technique is required. This usually means using a still air box or flow hood.
How long does colonization take?
Usually 1–3 weeks depending on species, temperature, and conditions.
When do I mix grain with substrate?
Only after the grain is fully colonized and completely white.
What substrate should I use?
CVG → dung-loving species
Masters Mix → wood-loving species (oysters, lion’s mane, etc.)
When do I introduce fresh air?
After full colonization, usually when pinning begins.
Why isn’t my bag colonizing?
Most common causes are too much liquid culture, poor airflow, temperature issues, or weak culture.
What does contamination look like?
Green, black, pink, or orange growth. Also sour or foul smells.
Can I still use a bag if it looks off?
If you’re unsure, give it time. If you see clear contamination or smell something bad, don’t use it.
How should I store grain before using it?
Keep it sealed, in a cool clean place, out of direct sunlight.
