How to Harvest Mushrooms
How to Harvest Mushrooms
Harvesting at the right time helps maximize yield and quality. Waiting too long or harvesting too early can affect both size and future flushes.
When to Harvest
For most species:
- Harvest just before or right as caps begin to open
- Edges of the caps are still slightly curved downward
For Lion’s Mane:
- Harvest when spines are fully formed but before they start to yellow or dry
How to Harvest
-
Grab at the base
Hold the mushroom cluster close to where it meets the substrate. -
Twist and pull gently
Remove it in one motion without tearing up the surrounding substrate. -
Clean up the area
Remove any leftover pieces to prevent rot or contamination.
After Harvest
- You can allow the block to rest and prepare for another flush
- If the substrate looks dry, lightly mist the inside of the bag
- Fold or close the bag back up if needed to retain humidity
Important Notes
- Do not wait too long—overripe mushrooms drop spores and degrade faster
- Clean harvests help future flushes
- Handle gently to avoid damaging the substrate
- Keep conditions stable between flushes
Common Mistakes
- Waiting too long to harvest
- Tearing instead of cleanly removing
- Leaving behind rotting material
- Letting the substrate dry out after harvest
- Overhandling the grow between flushes
