How to Mix Grain and Substrate
How to Mix Grain and Substrate
Mixing grain with substrate is where your grow really starts to expand. Doing this correctly helps ensure fast colonization and strong, even growth.
Step-by-step
-
Make sure grain is fully colonized
Do not mix early. Grain should be completely white and solid throughout. -
Prepare your workspace
Work in a clean area. You don’t need sterile conditions, but avoid obvious contamination sources. -
Break up the grain
Loosen the grain completely so it mixes evenly with the substrate. -
Add substrate
Combine your grain with CVG or Masters Mix depending on the species. -
Mix thoroughly
Distribute the grain evenly throughout the substrate. Avoid clumps. -
Level and lightly pack
Shape the mixture so it’s even, but don’t compress it too tightly. -
Let it colonize
Store at room temperature (68–75°F) until the substrate is fully colonized.
Important Notes
- A common ratio is around 1:1 grain to substrate
- Even mixing leads to faster colonization
- Match substrate type to the species
- Avoid direct sunlight during colonization
- Keep conditions stable
Common Mistakes
- Mixing before full colonization
- Uneven distribution of grain
- Packing too tightly
- Using the wrong substrate
- Letting conditions fluctuate too much
