How to Store Grain and Substrate
How to Store Grain and Substrate
Proper storage helps maintain the quality of your grain and substrate before use. Poor storage can lead to contamination, drying out, or reduced performance.
Before Inoculation (Sterilized Grain)
- Store in a cool, clean area
- Avoid direct sunlight
- Keep bags sealed until use
- Do not puncture or open early
If stored properly, sterilized grain can last for a reasonable period before inoculation.
After Inoculation (Colonizing Grain)
- Keep at room temperature (68–75°F)
- Avoid temperature swings
- Keep out of direct sunlight
- Do not constantly handle or move the bag
Stable conditions are more important than perfect conditions.
Colonized Grain Spawn
- Best used as soon as fully colonized
- Can be held short-term in a cool environment if needed
- Avoid long storage at room temperature once fully colonized
Substrate (Before Use)
- Keep sealed until ready to mix
- Store in a clean, dry place
- Avoid extreme heat or cold
Important Notes
- Always check bags before use
- Do not use anything that shows signs of contamination
- Avoid unnecessary handling
- Consistency in storage conditions matters
Common Mistakes
- Storing in hot environments
- Leaving bags in direct sunlight
- Opening bags too early
- Letting products sit too long unused
- Ignoring signs of contamination before use
