How to Use CVG Substrate

How to Use CVG Substrate

CVG (coco coir, vermiculite, and gypsum) is used as a bulk substrate after your grain is fully colonized. This guide covers how to properly mix and use CVG for best results.

Step-by-step

  1. Make sure your grain is fully colonized
Do not mix early. Grain should be completely white and evenly colonized.
  2. Prepare your workspace
Work in a clean area. Full sterile conditions aren’t necessary, but avoid obvious contamination sources.
  3. Break up the grain
Break the colonized grain into loose pieces before mixing.
  4. Mix with CVG substrate
Combine your grain and CVG evenly. A common ratio is around 1:1, but this can vary.
  5. Load into your bag or container
Once mixed, level it out and prepare for colonization.
  6. Let it colonize
Store at room temperature (68–75°F) until the substrate is fully colonized.
  7. Introduce fruiting conditions
Once colonized, allow fresh air exchange and monitor humidity to begin fruiting.

Important Notes

  • CVG is for dung-loving species, not wood-loving mushrooms
  • Do not mix with uncolonized grain
  • Keep conditions stable during colonization
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Maintain proper moisture—do not let it dry out

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing grain before full colonization
  • Using CVG for the wrong species
  • Uneven mixing of grain and substrate
  • Letting the substrate dry out
  • Introducing fresh air too early
