How to Use Masters Mix

How to Use Masters Mix

Masters Mix (hardwood and soy hull) is used as a bulk substrate for wood-loving mushrooms. This guide covers how to properly mix and use it after your grain is fully colonized.

Step-by-step

  1. Make sure your grain is fully colonized
Do not mix early. Grain should be completely white and evenly colonized.
  2. Prepare your workspace
Work in a clean area. Full sterile conditions aren’t necessary, but avoid obvious contamination sources.
  3. Break up the grain
Break the colonized grain into loose pieces before mixing.
  4. Mix with Masters Mix substrate
Combine your grain and Masters Mix evenly. A common ratio is around 1:1.
  5. Load into your bag or container
Once mixed, pack it down lightly and shape it evenly.
  6. Let it colonize
Store at room temperature (68–75°F) until fully colonized.
  7. Introduce fruiting conditions
Cut a slit directly into the side of the substrate and allow fresh air exchange to begin fruiting.

Important Notes

  • Masters Mix is for wood-loving species (Lion’s Mane, oysters, chestnut, etc.)
  • Do not use for dung-loving species
  • Always keep the top of the bag folded
  • Fruit directly from the side of the bag
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Maintain stable temperatures during colonization

Common Mistakes

  • Using Masters Mix for the wrong species
  • Mixing grain before full colonization
  • Cutting the bag too early
  • Letting the substrate dry out
  • Not allowing proper fresh air exchange during fruiting
