How to Use Masters Mix
How to Use Masters Mix
Masters Mix (hardwood and soy hull) is used as a bulk substrate for wood-loving mushrooms. This guide covers how to properly mix and use it after your grain is fully colonized.
Step-by-step
-
Make sure your grain is fully colonized
Do not mix early. Grain should be completely white and evenly colonized. -
Prepare your workspace
Work in a clean area. Full sterile conditions aren’t necessary, but avoid obvious contamination sources. -
Break up the grain
Break the colonized grain into loose pieces before mixing. -
Mix with Masters Mix substrate
Combine your grain and Masters Mix evenly. A common ratio is around 1:1. -
Load into your bag or container
Once mixed, pack it down lightly and shape it evenly. -
Let it colonize
Store at room temperature (68–75°F) until fully colonized. -
Introduce fruiting conditions
Cut a slit directly into the side of the substrate and allow fresh air exchange to begin fruiting.
Important Notes
- Masters Mix is for wood-loving species (Lion’s Mane, oysters, chestnut, etc.)
- Do not use for dung-loving species
- Always keep the top of the bag folded
- Fruit directly from the side of the bag
- Avoid direct sunlight
- Maintain stable temperatures during colonization
Common Mistakes
- Using Masters Mix for the wrong species
- Mixing grain before full colonization
- Cutting the bag too early
- Letting the substrate dry out
- Not allowing proper fresh air exchange during fruiting
